Your Work Doesn’t Speak For You; You Speak For Your Work
I have an extremely close friend who is incredibly articulate, well educated and hard working. His one issue: he does not advocate for his work.
He like most people believe their work should speak for itself. Since he has not spoken for his work and let his work speak for him, he was passed up for promotion after promotion while staying continually loyal to the same company. While I agree with the sentiment that this is what SHOULD happen, it frequently does not work out this way. In a life full of distractions and tons of moving components in a normal persons life people don’t always notice obvious details happening around them.
This is where speaking for your work and getting it noticed by your management helps tremendously. This same friend finally spoke up for his work and his ideas and managed to get them implemented. He now works as a manager himself and advocates for others to do the same.
All I ask is not to be a brown noser either. Nobody likes that, but be a try hard. You have one life and if you think your idea is a good one, the only way to tell is have it challenged by others. But this is another discussion for another day.
- Stay curious my friends.
